When a major website security issue makes the news, the first question is usually pretty simple: “Is my site safe?”
The recent PHP vulnerabilities are serious, but fixes are available. What matters is whether your hosting provider has applied them.
Here’s what happened, what’s at stake and what to check.
PHP is part of the technology that powers WordPress and many other websites. On October 21, the PHP team announced two critical vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to run code on an affected server without logging in. Immediate updates were recommended.
That could potentially open the door to stolen information, malicious software, changes to website content or service interruptions. For a business, the consequences can include lost sales, missed enquiries and damage to customer trust.
A website can look and function normally while still running vulnerable software. Waiting for visible signs of trouble isn’t a reliable approach.
Most NVISION-hosted websites run on WP Engine. Its response included updating firewall rules, applying temporary safeguards and then testing and deploying the official PHP patches.
In its October 22 update, WP Engine confirmed that all customer sites were running fully patched versions of PHP and reported no successful exploit attempts related to these vulnerabilities. NVISION hosting clients don’t need to take any action for these two PHP fixes.
Ask your provider to confirm that the October 21 PHP security patches have been applied to your hosting environment. Temporary safeguards can reduce exposure, but the PHP team made it clear that patching is the complete solution for these vulnerabilities.
Proactive hosting reduces the window attackers have to exploit a known weakness. Once a site is compromised, applying a patch may still leave cleanup, recovery and business disruption to deal with.
Hosting is one part of that picture. Ongoing maintenance of WordPress, plugins and themes matters too. Having clear ownership of both helps keep security updates from falling through the cracks.
