Thoughts From a Previous nvision Intern

Mobile-first design. Client-friendly UI. Flexbox.

These are all concepts and tools that have stuck with me throughout my years after my co-op at nvision, and have made me the developer I am today.

Hey, I’m Brian – I’m a second-year Computer Science student at the University of Toronto, currently on a co-op as a Full Stack Developer at RBC. Every day, I work on applications that streamline commercial credit processes for over 800,000 clients, and when I’m not in the office you can find me attending/organizing hackathons, working on my own website, or watching Netflix.

I was first introduced to nvision back in Fall 2015 as a high school student. As a student, there weren’t many opportunities to apply the web development skills I learned in class and through volunteer positions to real life scenarios. A friend of mine mentioned I should consider seeking an internship at nvision as it was an award-winning web development agency, so I applied and was hired as a Web Developer intern!

The first few weeks were pretty daunting as this was my first position at a real company, but the team at nvision were really accommodating and helped me learn their stack quickly. At nvision, we used WordPress with PHP as a back-end, as well as Foundation and SASS for the front-end. I was tasked with replicating Photoshop mockups created by the designers, and turning them into real websites to hone my front-end skills. A ton of emphasis was put on the client experience – ensuring that copy on the site was easily editable, sites were responsive on any device, and that each site wasn’t just a site, but an interactive, amazing experience for clients and their users.

Throughout my four months at nvision, George, Kyle, Kevin, and Erika spent numerous hours of their time ensuring I was following industry practice and ensured my co-op was a success. They were always available even with deadlines approaching fast, and I can’t thank them enough for always supporting me. It’s only because they put in the time and effort into helping me that I’m the developer I am today.
