How to Spot a Marketing Charlatan: Guarantees, AI Hype, and Other Red Flags

The marketing charlatan has never had it this good. But AI handed them a fresh disguise. Now they sell you software dressed up as strategy, and they swear it replaces your whole team. Of course, I’ve watched this pitch land all year. It sounds slick. Still, the results come back hollow.

Here is why this matters. You are spending real money and real time. So a marketing charlatan wastes both. Worse, they set your growth back by quarters, sometimes years. In fact, the cost is not the invoice. The cost is the revenue you never earned while you trusted the wrong people.

So let me give you the red flags. Learn them once and you will spot the con in the first meeting.

The Charlatan’s Favorite Promise Is a Guarantee

Walk away when someone guarantees you leads. Walk faster when they promise a number. No honest marketer offers guaranteed results, because nobody controls your market, your offer, your sales team, or your timing.

Instead, here is what we can promise: effort, strategy, rigor, and senior attention on your account. We also promise the work connects to revenue. But the outcome itself depends on too many moving parts to swear to with a straight face.

How the Marketing Charlatan Hides Behind AI

Here is the newest costume. AI can replace your entire marketing agency, they say. Buy the skill, fire the team, then watch the leads roll in.

First, I tested the agents. Then I read the outputs. They are decent. Of course, decent is the whole problem.

AI is a tool. A fast one, a useful one, a tool I use every day. But a tool does not own your context. It does not sit in your sales calls. Also, it cannot hear the hesitation in a prospect’s voice or catch the one objection that keeps killing your deals.

Marketing runs on nuance. Moreover, it runs on instinct built from hundreds of campaigns and thousands of conversations. An AI skill has none of that. Instead, it holds a pattern, and it returns the average of everything it has ever seen.

So the marketing charlatan hands you average and calls it strategy.

Why AI Marketing Content All Sounds the Same

Read enough AI marketing content and you start to see the seams. The same structure. The same tidy phrasing. Then comes the same safe angle that offends no one and moves no one.

That is not a flaw you can prompt your way out of. Because the model returns what is common, by design. And common is the opposite of memorable.

Your brand does not grow by sounding like everyone else. Instead, it grows by saying the thing your competitors are too cautious to say. However, a machine tuned for the middle will never find that line for you.

How to Spot a Marketing Charlatan Before You Sign

By now the pattern should be clear. Here are the red flags to keep in your pocket before you sign anything.

  • They offer guaranteed results. Meanwhile, real outcomes depend on factors no agency controls.
  • They claim AI replaces the whole team. But AI speeds the work, it does not own the thinking.
  • Their samples could belong to any brand. So generic work earns generic returns.
  • They lead with tactics and skip strategy. Therefore channels without a plan burn budget.
  • Vanity metrics fill their reports while revenue gets dodged. Still, followers do not pay your invoices.
  • They cannot explain your business back to you. Because no context means no real strategy.

Spot two of these in a pitch and slow down. Spot three and walk.

The Bottom Line

Marketing charlatans thrive on shortcuts and fear. They sell certainty, AI miracles, and recycled work, because those are easy to pitch and impossible to deliver.

But good marketing is harder than that. It takes context, instinct, original thought, and a stubborn focus on revenue. No skill replaces that. No guarantee fakes it.

So hire the people who ask about your business before they pitch you a tactic. Also hire the ones who tie every dollar of effort to a dollar of return. That is the work. Everything else is a costume.
